Why do bats consume blood?īecause of their nutrient-poor diet, vampire bats have meager stores of energy, making them particularly vulnerable to starvation. The animals are so light and graceful that they can sometimes drink blood from an animal for more than 30 minutes without waking it up. Rather than sucking blood like a vampire, these bats make a small cut with their teeth, then lap up the flowing blood with their tongues. Three extant bat species feed solely on blood: the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus), the hairy-legged vampire bat (Diphylla ecaudata), and the white-winged vampire bat (Diaemus youngi). Their food source is blood, a dietary trait called hematophagy.
